Tributary States and Vassals: The Asante Political System
The Asante Confederacy ruled through a complex system of tributary states, vassal kingdoms, and subject peoples, all bound through political relationships and military power. Tributary states maintained their own rulers and local authority while recognizing Asante supremacy and paying annual tribute in gold, slaves, and goods. The Asantehene received tribute, military service, and trade monopolies while guaranteeing vassals protection and formal recognition of their authority.
