Dutch merchants in the fort conducted trade negotiations with African merchants, especially Asante traders who dominated the gold commerce. The fort maintained careful records of goods received and shipped. Clerks tracked inventories of trade goods, gold, and enslaved people as they moved through the fort.
Living Conditions
Upper-level officers enjoyed relatively comfortable quarters. Common soldiers and merchants endured difficult conditions, suffering from tropical diseases, limited food supplies, and psychological strain. High mortality rates meant constant personnel rotation from Europe.
