Navigation and Ships: Dutch Maritime Technology
The Dutch dominated late 17th-century shipbuilding and navigation technology. Dutch ships were robust, reliable for long ocean voyages, and relatively fast. Navigation innovations—improved charts, instruments—enabled more direct routes to West Africa. Maritime superiority gave the Dutch advantages in trade competition.
Ship Types
Different vessel types served different purposes: small pinnaces for coastal trade, medium merchantmen for gold commerce, and large ships for transatlantic slavery. The design of ships reflected their purposes and trading routes. Regular maintenance ensured vessels remained seaworthy in difficult conditions.
